Cross vs Isolated Margin

Cross margin shares your whole balance across positions. Isolated margin ring-fences each one. Which to use, and the failure mode of each.

The difference in one line

Cross margin backs every position with your entire account balance. Isolated margin backs each position with only the margin you explicitly assigned to it.

Cross margin

Everything in the account is collateral for everything else. A winning position's unrealised profit supports a losing one, which makes liquidation less likely for any single trade. It is also more capital-efficient: you are not leaving margin parked against positions that do not need it.

The failure mode is total. If the account is liquidated, it takes every cross position with it. Traders who use cross and then let one conviction trade grow oversized are, without meaning to, betting the whole account on that one idea.

Isolated margin

Each position gets a fixed allocation. If the trade goes wrong, that allocation is the maximum you lose: the rest of the account is untouched. This makes the downside knowable in advance, which is the entire point.

The cost is efficiency and attention. Liquidation arrives sooner because there is no buffer behind the position, and you have to actively add margin if you want to hold through volatility. Isolated positions get liquidated on moves that a cross account would have absorbed without noticing.

Choosing

Isolated suits high-leverage speculation, illiquid or newly listed markets, and any position you would not want to risk the account on. Cross suits hedged books, low-leverage positioning, and portfolios where positions genuinely offset each other.

A common working arrangement: cross for the core book, isolated for anything speculative. The margin mode is set per market before you open the position, and changing it on an open position is restricted, so decide before you enter rather than after.

Account types on Hyperliquid

Separately from cross and isolated, Hyperliquid offers account modes that govern how spot and perps balances interact. A unified account shares one USDC balance across both. A standard account keeps them separate with manual transfers. Portfolio margin lets eligible assets such as HYPE or BTC serve as perp collateral directly, without converting to USDC first.
